General animal feed materials

Feed

Feed quality directly impacts animal health and performance. In bulk storage and transport, feed is vulnerable to degradation, moisture and contamination, making preservation essential for safety, nutritional value and commercial confidence.

Animal feed, including high-value segments such as horse feed, contains fats, vitamins and antioxidants that are highly sensitive to oxygen and moisture. In bulk packaging, uncontrolled environmental exposure can lead to oxidation, rancidity and mold development, often without immediate visual signs. Traditional paper or polyethylene bags offer limited protection, shortening shelf life and increasing risk. Feed manufacturers typically recommend consumption within 30 to 60 days, yet logistics and storage realities often exceed this window. Preserving feed quality for longer periods, without compromising safety or nutritional integrity, has become a growing challenge across the supply chain.

Challenges in feed preservation

Safety under pressure

Feed degradation is driven by a combination of oxygen, moisture and biological activity. Elevated moisture levels and heat create ideal conditions for mold growth, which can occur both in the field and during storage. Under these conditions, molds may produce mycotoxins, posing serious risks to animal health and productivity. Oxidation further accelerates fat rancidity, reducing palatability and nutritional value.

Insects such as mites thrive in poorly protected bulk feed, increasing contamination risks. At the same time, repeated sampling and partial unloading complicate preservation, as conventional packaging cannot be reliably resealed. Maintaining stable conditions throughout storage and handling is critical to ensure feed remains safe and effective.

The VacQPack solution for feed

Stable protection

VacQPack applies bulk-sized Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) to protect feed under low-oxygen, controlled conditions. High-barrier liners drastically reduce oxygen and water vapor transmission, slowing oxidation, stabilizing vitamins and antioxidants, and inhibiting mold and insect activity. The system supports repeated opening and resealing for sampling or partial unloading without loss of protection. By extending shelf life well beyond conventional limits, VacQPack enables safer storage, reduced waste and consistent feed quality, even under challenging temperature and humidity conditions.

Best practice

Learn how customers across different commodities use VacQPack as a best practice for quality protection. By applying natural MAP, they prevent insects, control moisture, and safeguard product value throughout storage and transport.

Particularly on humid and hot areas, problems like condensation, variation of moisture content, oxidation and in some cases insect infestation, are common on the difficult task of keeping the quality of soybean seeds during storage.
The refrigeration is the conventional technique for preservation, but it requires a great deal of investment on infrastructures and implies significant expenditures on energy. Besides, once the seed leaves the refrigeration mode, gets again vulnerable and enters in a rapid degradation process.
