General animal feed materials
Feed
Feed quality directly impacts animal health and performance. In bulk storage and transport, feed is vulnerable to degradation, moisture and contamination, making preservation essential for safety, nutritional value and commercial confidence.
Challenges in feed preservation
Safety under pressure
Feed degradation is driven by a combination of oxygen, moisture and biological activity. Elevated moisture levels and heat create ideal conditions for mold growth, which can occur both in the field and during storage. Under these conditions, molds may produce mycotoxins, posing serious risks to animal health and productivity. Oxidation further accelerates fat rancidity, reducing palatability and nutritional value.
Insects such as mites thrive in poorly protected bulk feed, increasing contamination risks. At the same time, repeated sampling and partial unloading complicate preservation, as conventional packaging cannot be reliably resealed. Maintaining stable conditions throughout storage and handling is critical to ensure feed remains safe and effective.

Best practice
Particularly on humid and hot areas, problems like condensation, variation of moisture content, oxidation and in some cases insect infestation, are common on the difficult task of keeping the quality of soybean seeds during storage.
The refrigeration is the conventional technique for preservation, but it requires a great deal of investment on infrastructures and implies significant expenditures on energy. Besides, once the seed leaves the refrigeration mode, gets again vulnerable and enters in a rapid degradation process.
