Juglans regia
Walnuts
Walnuts are a highly nutritious, oil-rich nut where freshness, color and taste directly determine market value. Their sensitivity to oxygen and moisture makes controlled storage essential for preserving quality over time.
With one of the highest oil contents among nuts, walnuts oxidize rapidly when exposed to air, leading to rancidity, off-flavors and discoloration. Moisture absorption further increases the risk of mold growth and mycotoxin development, posing serious food safety concerns. Maintaining low-oxygen conditions is therefore critical throughout storage and transport. Conventional packaging often fails to sustain these conditions long-term, especially in bulk logistics. As walnuts are increasingly handled in palletized bulk for efficiency, reliable atmospheric control has become a key requirement to protect quality, appearance and nutritional value from origin to destination.
Challenges in walnut preservation
Oil-sensitive nut
Walnut preservation is primarily challenged by oxidation. Exposure to oxygen rapidly increases rancidity, negatively affecting taste, aroma and shelf life. At the same time, oxygen-driven discoloration of walnut kernels reduces visual appeal and market value. Moisture uptake further complicates storage, as it promotes mold growth and the potential formation of mycotoxins.
Insect infestation presents an additional risk, particularly because eggs can survive conventional fumigation and hatch later during storage or transport. Long storage periods demand a solution that not only creates low-oxygen conditions, but maintains them consistently over time. Traditional packaging struggles to combine gas tightness, moisture protection and logistical efficiency, especially at bulk scale.

The VacQPack solution for walnuts
Long-term control
VacQPack preserves walnuts using bulk-sized Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) that creates and maintains a stable low-oxygen environment. High-barrier, gastight liners protect against oxygen and moisture ingress, effectively slowing oxidation, preventing discoloration and inhibiting mold growth. By replacing air with nitrogen or carbon dioxide, VacQPack delivers a fully organic bio treatment that eliminates insects in all life stages, including eggs. Combined with palletized bulk handling, the solution improves logistical efficiency while ensuring walnuts retain their taste, color and quality throughout extended storage and transport.
- Consistent product quality and taste
- Reduced food loss and waste
- Full control over product safety
- Optimized total cost of ownership (TCO)
- Non-chemical, organic treatment

Best practice
Particularly on humid and hot areas, problems like condensation, variation of moisture content, oxidation and in some cases insect infestation, are common on the difficult task of keeping the quality of soybean seeds during storage.
The refrigeration is the conventional technique for preservation, but it requires a great deal of investment on infrastructures and implies significant expenditures on energy. Besides, once the seed leaves the refrigeration mode, gets again vulnerable and enters in a rapid degradation process.
