Bio treatment of organic wheat
On organic wheat preservation is key to keep out the oxygen, to uphold it cool and dry. VacQPack delivers a bio fumigation based on MAP, storage temperature and vacuum (low pressure). Wheat conservation and the storage of any bulk grain for that matter, when stored properly, can easily last six to eight years or more, without losing any of its nutritional benefits.
VacQPack alerts for a very common and repeated issue in cases of problems with the preservation of wheat. Although cleaning procedures taken place after the harvest, insect eggs might still be present inside the grain and alive. It’s critical to consider this threat and act, defending the stored wheat from being eaten by the hatchlings.
Using MAP as a strategy, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is an inert gas, relatively cheap and capable of delivering a long term storage. Being toxic for bugs, it also helps in keeping the wheat dry and cool within VacQPack’s hermetic airtight liner.
The recommended safe boundary of moisture content for storage of wheat is 15%. Overhead this level the degree of respiration and heat generation is such that germination begins, as enzymes are activated. Hot spots in the grain are originated and there is the hazard of spontaneous combustion.
The main challenge on the industry lies on processes, especially on packaging. Studies have demonstrated that moisture content of the hermetic bags becomes constant after three months, while in the case of steel bins and gunny bags, the moisture level follows the ambient conditions. The gas barrier EVOH present in all VacQPack’s liners prevents from such problem.
Finally, a study released in 2016 by CORNEL S ADLER proves that VacQPack delivers:
The vacuum bags when opened after the shortest storage period of three months did not reveal visible damage caused by granary weevils and no survivors were found.
We conclude that vacuum storage could be valuable for long-term storage of sufficiently dry stored products even if a moderate infestation is already present.
Wheat grown in intensive systems requires high levels of inputs, including herbicides, pesticides, mechanical power, fertilizers and chemical preservation methods. The ecological footprint of the entire chains of production and commercialization of wheat is high. VacQPack proudly proposes a bio fumigation using gases captured from the atmosphere, low level of energy to operate and packaging that is reusable.
Wheat is loaded with nutrients, including fiber, vitamin E, protein, calcium, niacin, manganese, and riboflavin.
